Henry Rollins - Nights Behind The Tree Line $10 A few months ago, I was in London, England and was asked to read on a BBC Radio show. I read this thing I wrote called "No Shore II" and talked about how the piece was a homage to the great American writer Thomas Wolfe who often spoke of there being "no door." Afterwards, I got to thinking about reading a few things in the studio for release to change things up from the usual live spoken recordings I put out. So, here's some stuff I wrote, read aloud to brave and patient engineerBrian on the afternoons of September 16 & 23, 2003. I hope you enjoy it. One dollar from each CD sold will be given to the Hollygrove Children's Services here in the doomed city of Los Angeles so these kids can grow big and strong and get the hell out of this town! Thank you. -- Henry Rollins[Tracks 1-5 from the book Solipsist, Tracks 6-15 previously unreleased, Track 16 from the book Broken Summers, all written by Henry Rollins.] |

Kalooki Nights $11.99 Max Glickman, a Jewish cartoonist whose seminal work is a comic history titled Five Thousand Years of Bitterness , recalls his childhood in a British suburb in the 1950s. Growing up, Max is surrounded by Jews, each with an entirely different and outspoken view on what it means to be Jewish. His mother, incessantly preoccupied with a card game called Kalooki, only begrudgingly puts the deck away on the High Holy Days. Max's father, a failed boxer prone to spontaneous nosebleeds, is a self-proclaimed atheist and communist, unable to accept the God who has betrayed him so unequivocally in recent years. But it is through his friend and neighbor Manny Washinsky that Max begins to understand the indelible effects of the Holocaust and to explore the intrinsic and paradoxical questions of a postwar Jewish identity. Manny, obsessed with the Holocaust and haunted by the allure of its legacy, commits a crime of nightmare proportion against his family and his faith. Years later, after his friend's release from prison, Max is inexorably drawn to uncover the motive behind the catastrophic act -- the discovery of which leads to a startling revelation and a profound truth about religion and faith that exists where the sacred meets the profane. Spanning the decades between World War II and the present day, acclaimed author Howard Jacobson seamlessly weaves together a breath-takingly complex narrative of love, tragedy, redemption, and above all, remarkable humor. Deeply empathetic and audaciously funny, Kalooki Nights is a luminous story torn violently between the hope of restoring and rebuilding Jewish life, and the painful burden of memory and loss. |

Behind The Moon $9.69 From Vogel award-winning author Hsu-Ming Teo, a powerful novel about the ties of friendship, love and history. How did people connect with each other? How was it that some people managed to manacle others to their lives, bearing their childhood friendships with them triumphantly into the future, whereas others found friendship as weak as water, sparkling and slipping through cupped fingers? Justin Cheong, Tien Ho and Nigel Gibbo' Gibson have been best friends since school in a world divided along ethnic lines into skips, wogs and slopes. Together they've survived a suburban tragedy, compulsory karaoke nights and Justin's mother's obsession with clean toilets. They thought they would always be there for each other but they hadn't counted on the effects of jealousy, betrayal, and their desire to escape themselves. Ho Ly-Linh, Tien's mother, wasn't around for much of Tien's childhood. Left behind in a rapidly changing Vietnam, she risked everything to follow her family to Australia. Having spent so much of this dangerous journey alone, she is ready now to find love. On Saturday, 6 September 1997 they all meet at the Cheongs' house for the first time in years because Princess Diana is dead and their mothers have decided to hold a Dead Diana Dinner to watch the funeral on television. Nobody realises just how explosive this dinner will be, or how complicated life is going to get. This is a story of three families' discovery of the meaning of love and friendship. |
